It was in Dark Reunion when during the fight with Klaus when Damon and Bonnie look at each other and Bonnie realizes that they are not predator and prey, that in that moment, they were just Damon and Bonnie, I think that taught Damon a lot. And from then on, there was always subtle interplay between them. If not for Bonnie, and and for Damon’s feelings about her, Meredith and Matt and she would have all died when the trees trapped their car in NIGHTFALL.
